Procedures for AKC Registration of Chinooks
Open Registration Explained

October 2022:  Chinook Club of America Board of Directors petitioned the American Kennel Club (AKC) to extend the open registration program for Chinooks for two more years.  Board member and Registrar Shelly Londer has volunteered to run the extended program and will help with the registration process. The following information explains how to register your Chinook with AKC.

Please Note: AKC will be accepting UKC registrations for AKC registration purposes until Jan 1, 2025.   CCA is covering the registration fees for these Chinooks.  For free registrations, send your paperwork to Shelly who will submit the forms to AKC.  If you mail your paperwork to AKC instead of to Shelly, you’ll need to also include payment.

What is Open Registration?

Open Registration is an AKC program that allows ALL United Kennel Club (UKC) registered Chinooks inclusion in the AKC’s Chinook registration database using their UKC papers.  This program ends January 2025, so the clock is ticking!

There are still many Chinooks that are not registered with AKC.  CCA hopes that members and owners will reach out to breeders and littermates to generate interest in AKC registration.  Chinooks have a small population, and every Chinook is important to be included in the AKC database.  In order to help to preserve our Breed, we need as many Chinooks registered as possible!

If your Chinook has a pedigree issued from the United Kennel Club (UKC) but has no AKC registration, the Open Registration Program is for you, and CCA will pick up the tab!

 How to Register your Chinook?

1.  Fill out the AKC’s Open Registration Application.

2.  Provide an 8.5” x 11” copy of your Chinook’s UKC Registration certificate, front and back.

3.  Include two color images of your dog standing: one front view and one side view and include your dog's name and UKC registration number on the back of each image.

4.  You can scan and email your packet to Shelly, or snail mail your packet to Patti Richards, CCA President, for processing, submission, and CCA’s payment.  (No money needed as CCA will pay for each Chinook registered through the Open Dog Registration Program.)  Snail Mail info:  Patti Richards, PO Box 276, Fair Haven, VT 05743

Registration Tips for Offspring of AKC Registered Parents

If your Chinook is not AKC registered, but your dog’s parents are AKC registered, or your breeder registered the litter with AKC, you can register your Chinook directly with AKC.  (Shelly can also help you with this.)  You can easily register your Chinook online:  Register Your Dog With the American Kennel Club Today (akc.org)

Errors in Paperwork

When papers arrive, please check your papers carefully - make sure dates and spelling are correct. If not, contact AKC Registration and they will issue a corrected registration.
