The CCA Board is soliciting comments on the following proposal: Chinook Club of America Open Registration for Chinooks who are not already listed with AKC FSS To implement the following Open Registration Period for Chinooks with UKC Pedigrees who are not already listed with AKC FSS. PROPOSAL: Chinooks with UKC pedigrees may be listed with AKC FSS through CCA at no cost during an open registration period. The timing of the open registration is to be determined but could begin as early as June 1, 2009. After the open registration period expires, any owner having UKC papers will still be able to register their Chinook by submitting forms with fees directly to AKC FSS. If you wish to have your Chinook listed with AKC FSS through the CCA open registration program you will need to submit a copy of your Chinooks UKC registration including a UKC three generation pedigree, along with an AKC FSS registration form to the CCA Registrar. When the program closes, the Registrar will send all pedigrees with applications to AKC FSS, all at the same time and in one batch per FSS requirement. In order to receive a three generation AKC FSS pedigree, every dog in your Chinooks UKC three generation pedigree needs to have a UKC number: for example a G, P, A, or LP number.
Background: AKC Recognition Process AKC Foundation Stock Service There are several basic steps to AKC recognition for a Breed. Initially, a Breed applies for, and is accepted into AKC's Foundation Stock Service (FSS) where enrolled dogs will be recorded and receive FSS certificates. Part of this process may include the submission of a Breed Club's Registry (if one exists) which then becomes the property of AKC. In addition, there must be an active National Breed Club and a Breed Standard. A Breed may now be allowed to compete in AKC Companion events (agility, obedience, & Rally Obedience) and a performance event (tracking) and earn titles. Effective January 1, 2004, Chinooks with FSS certificates were approved to compete in companion events. The purpose of FSS is simply to provide a registry service for breeds continuing to develop and move toward full AKC recognition. While in FSS, the Breed cannot compete in conformation shows to earn titles, but may compete in AKC Sanctioned Matches. This allows new breeds the opportunity to gain some experience in AKC conformation rings while allowing judges to see the Breed, ask questions, and give comments on the Standard. So, no Westminster quite yet if you only have FSS papers!
Another important
step toward AKC recognition is the selection of the National Parent
Club by AKC. The Chinook Breed has currently completed these steps:
Chinooks World Wide (later becoming Chinook Dog Club of America)
submitted their registry in 2001; the Chinook Club of America was
created in 2004, we submitted our standard in 2005, and we were
selected to be the AKC Parent Club for the Chinook in 2007.
In order to move forward in the recognition process, the Parent Club
must have its Bylaws and Standard approved by both the AKC and Club
members. This entails writing both documents in the format
established by AKC. This is the time for the Club to make changes to
the documents that were submitted with the application for Parent
Club.
Once the Bylaws
and Standard have been reformatted and approved by the membership
and AKC, the Club has participated in AKC events, held elections and
fulfilled other requirements; they may apply for the next step -
Miscellaneous Class. While in Miscellaneous Class, the Parent Club
is still under the jurisdiction of FSS, and should intensify its
efforts at Judges Education while continuing to participate in AKC
events and initiatives. While in Miscellaneous class there are still
no points or Championships, so no Westminster yet. Breeds in the
Miscellaneous Class may compete and earn titles in Companion Events
and also a Performance Event. Miscellaneous breeds are also eligible to compete
in Junior Showmanship. They may also compete at conformation shows,
but are limited to competition in the Miscellaneous Class and are
not eligible for championship points.
FSS enrollment
continues to be maintained while in Misc. Class. After about one to
three years in Miscellaneous Class, the Parent Club may apply for
full recognition for the Breed. When the AKC Board of Directors is
satisfied that a Breed is continuing a healthy, dynamic growth in
the Miscellaneous Class, it may be admitted to registration in the
Stud Book and the opportunity to compete in regular classes. At this
time, FSS recorded Chinooks possessing FSS certificates with a full
3 generation pedigree will move forward into the Stud Book of the
American Kennel Club. It is at this time that the Breed may compete
in regular conformation classes for championship titles - NOW you
can go to Westminster!
When the Parent
Club applies for full AKC recognition they request a date on which
they would like the stud book to close. With input from the Parent
Club, AKC makes the final decision on this and will not discuss this
beforehand. As a general rule, AKC recommends 3 years. |
