AKC/CAR Canine Support and Relief Fund - Katrina (15K PDF) Chinooks Worldwide changes name to Chinook Dog Club of America (14K PDF) A Timeline of Chinook Clubs, Breed Recognition and Registry History (11K PDF) |
News in Wrentham, Maine at the Wampanoag Kennel Club’s show, we take the next step in our journey toward full AKC recognition when the Chinook first steps into an AKC Show ring, as a part of the Miscellaneous Class. Nominating Committee - Urgent Call for Volunteers! Election time is just around the corner and the CCA is in immediate need of three volunteers from different areas of the U.S.A., and two alternates, all members in good standing. Under our new bylaws, only one Nominating Committee member may be a current board member. The majority of volunteers must be taken from the general membership, meaning that we need you! Volunteers are needed immediately with the final composition of the committee subject to board approval occurring on or before December 15th. The amount of time required for this two month task is modest, but this committee serves the vital function of recommending a slate of candidates for the 2010 election in which the positions of President, Treasurer, Show Trial and Trail, Publicity, and Rescue must be filled. The duties of the Nominating Committee are as follows:
Members will be able to make additional nominations from the floor at any time after February 15th by written petition addressed to the Secretary and postmarked on or before April 1st, signed by three members and accompanied by the written acceptance of each such additional nominee signifying his/her willingness to be a candidate. Members of the Nominating Committee are eligible to become candidates themselves, however, no person shall be a candidate for more than one elected position. To be eligible for an Officer position, a member must have been a voting member in good standing in the club for a minimum of two years, served on a Standing Committee, and be an owner of a purebred Chinook. The office of President has the additional requirement of having owned a Chinook for 4 years. Directors need only be members in good standing, however all candidates are required to be residents of the United States. If you have an interest in serving on the Nominating Committee, contact Debbie Premus, Vice President, at BoreaylChinooks@aol.com or 513-899-1912. For more information on nominations, elections, requirements of board positions up for election, and eligibility, please review the Constitution and Bylaws available on our web site at http://chinookclubofamerica.org/home.htm or contact Debbie Premus for assistance. A hard copy of the Constitution and Bylaws may also be requested from Joan McMahon, Secretary, at joanengelmcmahon@att.net. Today, November 10, 2009, the AKC Board of Directors voted to accept the Chinook Club of America's petition for Miscellaneous Class. Chinooks will be eligible to show in Miscellaneous class effective June 30, 2010, at all AKC Conformation Shows. We have all waited a long time for this, so please check out shows near you and get out and show your Chinooks. National Specialty 2009 Chinook Club of America is proud to present our second annual National Specialty on Sunday, September 20, 2009, at the Anheuser-Busch Brewery in Merrimack, NH. See the 2009 Specialty page for more information and don't forget to send in your Entry Form (186K PDF). Bylaws and Standard Vote Ballots for a vote on the Bylaws and Standard were sent to CCA's eligible voting members at the end of June. Those ballots have been counted and verified by a third party source. Both the Bylaws and Standard passed and they can now be found in the Documents section. Thanks to all of the members who took time to research the issues and vote. Open Registration Announcement Chinook Club of America, Inc is pleased to announce that it has petitioned and received permission from AKC to offer AKC/FSS listing for all individual UKC purebreds, not currently listed with AKC/FSS. This "Open Registration" will allow owners of UKC purebred Chinooks, not currently listed with AKC/FSS to obtain that listing, free of charge from June 1 until November 30, 2009 and for the regular registration fees after November 30. While other breeds with a similar opportunity generally offer it to members only, CCA has opened this free listing to all applicable Chinook owners for a limited time in an effort to include as many dogs as possible. We encourage all owners of UKC purebred Chinooks, not currently listed with AKC/FSS, to take advantage of this opportunity. As the owner of an AKC listed dog, there are a multitude of new services, events, health studies and educational opportunities available. Besides the prestige of showing your dog in AKC venues, AKC is the largest dog registry and initiates, supports and participates in the widest range of health initiatives in the world. AKC's involvement in rescue efforts through its AKC Companion Recovery is a pipeline of support through chip and scanner donations, veterinary student scholarships, search and rescue group grants, natural disaster relief, and many other charitable programs. Membership with CCA, as AKC parent club, is one way to maximize your AKC affiliation as well as be part of an exciting time as our breed moves into full AKC recognition! Details regarding the Open Registration are listed below: CHINOOK CLUB OF AMERICA OPEN REGISTRATION Time Frame: Beginning June 1, 2009 and ending November 30, 2009.

The CCA Board is soliciting comments on the following proposal: PROPOSALLat no cost during an open registration period. The timing of the open registration is to be determined but could begin as early as June 1, 2009. After the open registration period expires, any owner having UKC papers will still be able to register their Chinook by submitting forms with fees directly to AKC FSS. If you wish to have your Chinook listed with AKC FSS through the CCA open registration program you will need to submit a copy of your Chinook's UKC registration including a UKC three generation pedigree, along with an AKC FSS registration form to the CCA Registrar. When the program closes, the Registrar will send all pedigrees with applications to AKC FSS, all at the same time and in one batch per FSS requirement.. Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Peanut Butter and Peanut Paste in Many Foods The news has been filled with the contamination of peanut butter and peanut paste products from the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the contamination has caused an outbreak of salmonella that confirmed, reported onset of illness dates have ranged from September 1, 2008, to January 16, 2009. A total of 116 patients were reported hospitalized, and the infection might have contributed to eight deaths. Salmonellosis is an infection with bacteria called Salmonella. Most persons infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most persons recover without treatment. However, in some persons, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. In these patients, the Salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream, and then to other body sites and can cause death unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics. The elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness. Consumers exhibiting symptoms should contact their health care providers. Product recalls include some pet food products that contain peanut paste that was made by PCA. While the risk of animals contracting salmonellosis is minimal, there is risk to humans from handling these products. It is important that people to wash their hands and make sure children wash their hands before and, especially, after feeding treats to pets, as well as cleaning any surfaces exposed to these products. Pets, as well as humans, with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Well animals can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed a recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian. The following are excerpts from a press release by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration A combination of epidemiological analysis and laboratory testing by state officials in Minnesota and Connecticut, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), and the CDC have enabled the FDA to confirm that the sources of the outbreak of illnesses caused by Salmonella Typhimurium are peanut butter and peanut paste produced by the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) at its Blakely, Georgia processing plant. Neither of these products is sold directly to consumers. However, through its investigation, FDA has determined that PCA distributed potentially contaminated product to more than 100 consignee firms, for use as an ingredient in hundreds of different products, such as cookies, crackers, cereal, candy, ice cream, and pet treats. On January 29, PCA issued an expanded voluntary recall of all peanuts and peanut products processed in its Blakely, Georgia facility since January 1, 2007. The expanded recall includes all peanuts (dry and oil roasted), granulated peanuts, peanut meal, peanut butter and peanut paste. All of the recalled products were made only at the company's Blakely, Georgia facility. Companies nationwide that received products made by PCA have issued voluntary recalls of their products. As FDA gathers additional information about these products, the list of recalled products is expected to expand. FDA has a created a searchable database for these products, which can be found at http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/peanutbutterrecall/index.cfm . The list is updated frequently. - (Source: http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/salmonellatyph.html) Some of the dog food products that have been voluntarily recalled (Note: there have been no reported cases related to these products and please check the FDA site for updates) are: 1.
