First Chinooks to earn the Certificate of Merit Title

History was made on October 21, 2011 at the Albany Kennel Club’s show in West Springfield MA when Forever Greene Qannik, CM, NA, NAJ, RN, CGC became the first Chinook to earn the Certificate of Merit title.  Qannik took the breed with Mrs. Rita Holloway judging to earn her CM title.

Following close behind, Forever Greene Talis, CM, RN, CGC took both the breed and the Misc. class the very next day, earning her CM at the Albany Kennel Club show with Mr. P. Levi Marsman judging.  Talis is the second Chinook to earn the CM title.

Congratulations to owner breeders Patti and Perry Richards of Forever Greene Chinooks on this wonderful accomplishment!

How to earn a Certificate of Merit (from AKC’s Rules Applying to Dog Shows):

Winners of the Best of Breed and Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed in each of the individual miscellaneous breeds will be awarded points towards the Certificate of Merit (CM) title based on the number of dogs competing. Upon completion of the CM title a dog may continue to compete in the Miscellaneous class so long as they are of an eligible breed.

The CM suffix title is an introductory title to AKC conformation events and will be superseded by the CH title when earned. The Certificate of Merit requires 15 points awarded in accordance with the following point structure

July 1, 2010

In Wrentham, Maine at the Wampanoag Kennel Club’s show, we took our next step in our journey toward full AKC recognition when the Chinook first stepped into an AKC Show ring, as a part of the Miscellaneous Class.

AKC Miscellaneous Class

Today, November 10, 2009, the AKC Board of Directors voted to accept the Chinook Club of America's petition for Miscellaneous Class. Chinooks will be eligible to show in Miscellaneous class effective June 30, 2010, at all AKC Conformation Shows.

We have all waited a long time for this, so please check out shows near you and get out and show your Chinooks.

Bylaws and Standard Vote

Ballots for a vote on the Bylaws and Standard were sent to CCA's eligible voting members at the end of June.  Those ballots have been counted and verified by a third party source.  Both the Bylaws and Standard passed and they can now be found in the Documents section.  Thanks to all of the members who took time to research the issues and vote.

CCA hits the Airwaves!

On Saturday, January 19, 2008 CCA Director, Patti Richards was on the radio to talk about Chinooks and CCA with radio host and author, Tracie Hotchner. Tracie Hotchner is the author of THE DOG BIBLE: Everything Your Dog Wants You to Know (Gotham Books, November 2005), which is an encyclopedic guide to every aspect of sharing your life with a dog. DOG TALK The Radio Show gives you a chance to join in conversations between Tracie and callers about our favorite topic Dogs!

Tracie also invites people of interest to talk about their dog expertise and that’s why Patti was asked to call in and discuss our breed.

If you would like to hear the January 19 show, you can find it by going to http://www.traciehotchner.com/dt/, click on Dog Talk, and then click on Listen to the Show. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see a list of all of Tracie’s shows from 2007 to the present. Click on #59 (01-19-2008). Patti’s portion of the show is about two-thirds of the way through the program.

What great publicity for our Club and breed!

AKC Names CCA the Parent Club for the Chinook

The Board of Directors of Chinook Club of America, Inc., is pleased to announce the decision by the American Kennel Club regarding Parent Club for the Chinook: The decision has been made to recommend the Chinook Club of America as the Parent Club for the breed as it progresses toward the Miscellaneous Class and full American Kennel Club registration status. This club has proven that they are best prepared to complete the work necessary to reach the goal of full American Kennel Club recognition.  Chinook Club of America has fulfilled the goal it set as its very foundation.

In Memoriam

The Chinook community lost an important part of its history with the passing of Freda (Grammy) Greene Richards on August 15, 2006 at Lakewood Continuing Care Center in Waterville, Maine, of kidney failure.

Grammy was the daughter of Perry Greene, the sole breeder of Chinooks from the 1940s to the early 1960s. Perry Greene had known Arthur Walden and the other early Chinook breeders. Grammys memories of her father and his dogs have been an important link to the history of the Chinook breed.

Born in Bangor, Maine on May 7, 1915 to Perry and Nellie Strout Greene, Freda was married to Frederick Richards in 1937 and widowed in 1956. A single mother with four children, Grammy lived with her father for a time in Waldoboro where her father bred Chinooks. She later settled in Waterville, Maine. Active in her community, Grammy was known as a sharp, witty, talented, woman, beloved by her family and friends.

Freda is survived by two sons, Peter J. Richards Sr. and his wife, Brenda, and Thomas F. Richards and his wife, Linda; two daughters, Susan E. Bartsch and son-in-law, Wayne D. Parker, and Mary Jane Vigue and her husband, James R.; seven grandchildren, Perry G. Richards and his wife, Patti, Cindi Bailey and her husband, Bill, Peter J. Richards Jr. and his wife, Tammy, Michelle Pottle and her husband, Kenneth, Vincent Bartsch and his wife, Dee, Christopher Bartsch Sr. and Sharen Recanati and Cary Colwell and her husband, Bob; eight step grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two cousins.

The Chinook Club of America, Inc extends its deepest sympathies to the family of this wonderful woman. Her deep roots and contribution to the Chinook breed are appreciated and will be remembered.
